John Prine - "It's a Big Old Goofy World" About once a year, I listen to John Prine's The Missing Years and cry my frigging eyes out (with smiles, not tears). He's so virginal in his approach to songwriting; as if a song had never been written before ["hey guys, look what I learned to do"]. And this way of being, not ignorant but innocent in a way, makes his songs so fresh, so warm [red dress, slowdancing], so very true. Dignity is for winners. The rest of us can't afford it, so may as well stop trying to have it. [Buy] ******* My sister first told me about Subtle a while ago. Her thoughts on Doseone (who is this guy?): "kinda sounds like Zack from Rage, but fronting Portishead and !!! 's baby". My sister, as this song's black and slick back, is cool. And it's dark, like a shark swimming silently next to, or around in circles, you, with "i'm gonna fuck you up" written in stock-ticker style led's scrolling across its body. I highly anticipate the next Subtle album. Does anyone have any information on that for me? Posted by Dan at September 1, 2005 4:04 PMComments
I think Subtle is on some sort of break as they had a car accident while on tour earlier this year and one of their members was very seriously hurt. "Shattered vertebrae" ... More info here and there Posted by garrincha at September 1, 2005 6:05 PMEchosmack on the John Prine grins. Doesn't matter where I am when this comes up on the iPod. Instantly, I've a wooden porch beneath my feet and a cold Shiner beer in my hands. Kudos. Posted by David at September 2, 2005 11:00 PMSubtle is indeed on a break. They were in a car accident, and one of their memebers, Dax Pierson was badly injured. You can read all about it at www.daxpierson.com. PLease go check it out. Posted by ben at September 3, 2005 11:00 AMThe members of Subtle are also members of many other bands on the Anticon label (www.anticon.com)...it's all a little confusing to figure out...it's like one big happy incestuous family. Subtle's recognizable vocalist, Doseone, is also a member of Themselves who has teamed up with The Notwist to form 13&God, who are on tour now. If you like this Subtle track, then you should definitely check out 13&God. Their live show is excellent. Dax was missing from the show I caught in Hamburg this summer, but they pulled off a great show. Why? opened up for 13&God, and are another excellent indi hip-hop/rock band. I would highly suggest checking out some downloads from Why? ("sanddollars"), Themselves, 13&God, Passage and Alias on the Anticon website.
