OLD LONG SIGN

![]() Gordon Downie - "Insomniacs of the World Good Night". And loving evenings falling down in piles, Downie sings. Amid these evenings, these mornings- and afternoons-after, let's imagine a year without restlessness. A world of peace and fulfillment, of sleep and dream. We'll eat lembas and drink white tea; we'll smell the blooms on flowering trees; we'll remember the feeling of when our lips touched our friends' cheeks, last night. We'll not forget the feeling, petalblush moment after its happening. We'll remember the feeling of our lips as they touched our friends' cheeks, the second when we meant it - so easily and so clearly - and no fireworks were needed, not a single one, to light the room. I'm so glad you wrote about "Insomniacs" from "Coke Machine Glow." I've been going back to that album every 4-5 months consistently since its release. I've always envisioned the pulsing hum at the beginning of the song to be the sound of the glow of a lone soda machine in the distance at some rest stop or the side of a gas station on a dark highway. Posted by Scotter at January 1, 2009 9:21 PMoh wow... wow... i hadn't heard that before - that's (expleting) amazing. Posted by the boy satellite. at January 2, 2009 9:05 AMeven better than last year's new years post, which I thought would be difficult to top (destroyer & patrick wolf, oh my). but this, this, the gentlest of transcendences. . . yes, this is the new year. new in the calmest, most serene, innocent, untouched sense of the world. the softest of glances means the most. "we should be whispering all the time." Posted by sean at January 2, 2009 5:36 PMWow, what a beautiful song. Thank you! Posted by Amy at January 6, 2009 1:24 AMoh I wish I had found this at the proper time. lying half awake long after the whooping was over and done with. there was snow falling heavy like it was christmas not new years eve. someone had tucked a coat around my chest to keep me warm. and sean, I would love to wish you a (belated) happy birthday.
