Wager, Smarmiest Elk!

Please note: MP3s are only kept online for a short time, and if this entry is from more than a couple of weeks ago, the music probably won't be available to download any more.
The Great Lake Swimmers are slower than cars, slower than bicycles, than grass; they're about the speed of mountains, and maybe not that fast. They can be so simple, the Great Lake Swimmers - more simple than a proof of the Four Colour Theorem, or an ontological argument for the existence of god; they're about as simple as 2 + 3, and maybe simpler still. Here they're as monophonic as Josquin Desprez, exactly as linear as this ________________, and not even the sort of thing that can be as tautological as the argument I could give for the simple beauty of this song based on the true premise that it is possessed of a simple beauty. I'm thinking music nerds everywhere were as anxious as me to hear the monophony of which you speak, and it turns out the tune is at turns contrapuntal and homophonic. And then I realized you'd reffed Josquin despite his being all up in the motets and writing counterpoint like nobody's business. I'm disappointed here. Mucho disappointed. But the song is still great... Posted by DJ at February 9, 2007 5:24 PMDJ - Exactly! As monophonic as Josquin Desprez, i.e. not hugely. But the comment is still great. Posted by Jordan at February 9, 2007 5:29 PMeverytime a label or band does this i'm shocked and disgusted. are they fucking living in the stone age??? having a track up on StG could be the best thing that ever happened to a VERY MEDIOCRE band like Great Lake Swimmers. Posted by david b at February 9, 2007 6:17 PMWell, let's see: I didn't get to hear it, and they seem unlikely to be on the radio, so now if I'm curious about it I need to search out the CD and buy it on blind faith. Seems unlikely. Thank you, label, for sparing me from something I might have enjoyed. Posted by Tuwa at February 11, 2007 3:52 PMHomoPhonic! Ha. anyways, the new album is dumb. They all of a sudden decided they wanted to become a mediocre country band. Dude was a cathedral of haunted sadness. Wha' Happen? Posted by Sean Orr at February 19, 2007 1:58 AMPost a comment |
