Knee Deep In Grant Park

Tony Randall - "Byrd"

A change has come to America. Election night was like some kind of real-world masterwork. I cried like a little baby during that speech, not ashamed to admit. [via the WFMU blog]

I watched the election results with a black family who has worked their way from nothing to upper middle class through academia. They still own relics of segregation days (a "coloreds' waiting room" sign ironically graces their bathroom door). When the woman found out, the release of emotion was so powerful that I just started bawling like a baby. When she called her 80-year-old father and said, "DADDY! We did it!", I cried even harder.

I was in Grant Park, about a hundred feet away from him, when he gave his victory speech.
It was probably one of the most most emotional moments of my life, and it was incredibly moving to share it with 70,000 other people of a like mind.
